NHS Hull CCG is to host a special lunch on 8 September for 91 year old Hull-born former prima ballerina Maureen Leathley and her carer Janet Green (80). CCG Chief Officer Emma Latimer and Niccy Hallifax Hull 2017 Executive Producer will present the pair with two surprise tickets for the sell-out Royal Ballet performance at Hull New Theatre later this month.

Emma Latimer’s visits to Hull’s Endike Community Centre over the last three years have brought her into contact with Maureen who shared her remarkable story of a life in ballet. Maureen, who has been dancing since the age of ten, started out at a tiny dance school in Hull and then went on to become an associate of the Royal Academy of Dance

In recognition of her achievement and lifelong dedication to ballet, Emma and the Hull 2017 team wanted to make it possible for Maureen and Janet - Maureen’s carer and former dance pupil - to enjoy the performance on 16 September.

NHS Hull CCG is a Hull 2017 Major Partner, helping to ensure that the year-long programme of arts and culture has a lasting and positive impact on health and the lives of local residents and communities.

Emma Latimer said:

“Maureen’s story is unique and inspirational, and I was very touched hearing about the impact that ballet has had on her life - from humble beginnings in Hull to the Royal Academy. She still very much enjoys dancing in her later years, and we hope she will be delighted to experience this amazing performance as part of the UK City of Culture celebrations.”

Niccy Hallifax added:
“I’m delighted that we’re able to invite Maureen and Janet to such a special event that I am sure they will thoroughly enjoy and I hope will be an incredible evening. Ballet has been such a huge part of Maureen’s life, it seemed only fitting that when the Royal Ballet comes to her city, she should be there to enjoy this spectacular event.”
