From 1 July 2022, Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) will be dissolved, and Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) will take over the responsibility for NHS functions and budgets. Hull residents are being reminded of where to access appropriate health care over the upcoming Bank Holiday weekend.

Sarah Smyth, NHS Hull Clinical Commissioning Group Director of Quality and Clinical Governance/Executive Nurse said:

“We understand that the options for healthcare can be confusing; sometimes you might not know where to go to get the medical help and advice you need.”

“As a general rule for adults we would suggest talking to a pharmacist for quick, free advice on self-care for minor illnesses such as coughs and colds, and calling NHS 111 if you’re worried that your symptoms are worsening. Your GP can help with more complex issues and Minor Injury Units can treat basic injuries such as cuts, sprains and scalds.”

The below guide has been developed to help individuals choose the most appropriate option for their medical need:

  • Self-care: use over the counter remedies to treat coughs, colds and stomach upsets.
  • Pharmacy: visit your local pharmacy for free advice on illnesses and ailments, plus over the counter medicines. No appointment is needed.
  • Minor Ailments Scheme: For children under 16 years of age and individuals who do not pay for prescriptions a Pharmacist may be able to prescribe medicines free-of-charge without you having to see a Doctor. Ask at your local pharmacy for further details.
  • NHS 111: For quick, reliable advice in non-emergencies, call 111, free from landlines or mobiles, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Bransholme Health Centre Minor Injuries Unit (MIU): The MIU based at Bransholme Health Centre will be open from 9am – 8pm over the bank holiday weekend for injuries such as cuts, bites, sprains and scalds. No appointment necessary.
  • GP Walk in centre: Story Street Medical Practice will be open to registered and unregistered patients with or without an appointment, from 8am – 8pm over the bank holiday weekend.
  • Emergency Department: calling 999 or visiting the Emergency Department should only be considered in emergencies and life-threatening situations; if you or someone you know requires emergency treatment call 999 or visit the Emergency Department immediately.
