From 1 July 2022, Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) will be dissolved, and Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) will take over the responsibility for NHS functions and budgets. Self Care

 We all get sick sometimes, but it isn’t always appropriate to visit your GP. Self care means knowing how to keep fit and healthy, how to manage self-treatable conditions and exactly when to seek appropriate clinical help.


Coughs, colds & bugs
Many types of minor illness can be effectively treated at home with over the counter medication and rest.

If you find yourself with a sore-throat, a cough or a cold, then the NHS advises you to rest and wait at least 5 days before thinking about visiting your GP.

Most minor illnesses will improve on their own and it’s worth remembering that antibiotics cannot cure a cold or the flu. Find out more about staying well during the winter.

Keep a well-stocked medicine cabinet
Even a minor illness or ailment like a cold, headache or diarrhoea can disrupt your life. Be prepared for most common ailments by keeping a well-stocked medicine cabinet and a first aid kit at home. Discover what you should keep in your medicine cabinet.

Long term health conditions
If you have a long-term condition, self care is about understanding that condition and how to live with it. Make sure that you follow your GP’s advice and take medication exactly as instructed. Place your prescriptions before bank holidays to make sure you have enough to last while your GP or pharmacist may be closed.
