Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day pharmacy opening times

No one wants their Christmas and New Year ruined by illness or injury therefore, the local NHS and its partners are urging people to stay well this winter by being prepared and taking note of the following advice:

For people taking regular prescription medication it is important they order their repeat prescriptions so they do not run out over the Christmas period.

If people feel unwell, even if it’s just a cough or cold or aches and pains, they shouldn’t wait until it gets serious instead ask for help from the local pharmacist. Many pharmacies will have reduced opening hours over the Bank Holidays but some will be open on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Visit staywellthiswinter.co.uk for information on opening times.

Winter can be very demanding on health services. It’s important people visit the right services so they can be seen and treated quickly and effectively.  Visit staywellthiswinter.co.uk for more information on the local services available along with opening times. If people are still unsure where to go, call NHS 111 for advice.

For people needing to see a GP or a nurse over Christmas and the New Year appointments are available for routine, non-urgent care. Residents can book these appointments by calling their GP practice.

For those people with a long-term health condition such as COPD, bronchitis, emphysema, diabetes, heart or kidney disease, or have suffered a stroke, then the cold weather could make these conditions worse. Get advice straight away from a pharmacist at the first signs or symptoms of a winter respiratory illness, before it gets more serious.

Dr Gina Palumbo, Local GP and East Riding of Yorkshire Clinical Commissioning Group Chair said:

“Like any other day of the year you can become unwell over the Bank Holiday period. Some minor illnesses can be safely managed at home through self-care. However, there are a number of services available and I would urge you to make sure you visit the most appropriate for your condition. More information is available at staywellthiswinter.co.uk or alternatively if you are still unsure contact NHS 111 to speak to a fully trained advisor.”

Dr James Crick, Consultant in Public Health Medicine/Associate Medical Director for NHS HULL CCG, added:

“If you take regular medication it is important to stock up in good time for the winter holidays. This will help you to stay well over the break.

See some brief tips for good health this winter from Dr James Crick t here:

“Make sure to keep warm as the cold can cause complications for some people, particularly those with an existing medical condition. Try to heat your home to at least 18c and wear several layers as this will hold more heat close to your body.”

“Finally, winter can be very busy for local health services. Please make sure you choose the right service for your needs. If you’re unsure where to go you can always call NHS 111 for advice.”
