Hull and East Riding NHS organisations are set to open their doors next week to the Hull and East Yorkshire Children’s University, giving local children the opportunity to experience some of the many varied jobs available in the NHS.

The Hull and East Yorkshire Children’s University is a local charity that has been running for 21 years, their mission is to raise the aspirations of young people in Hull and East Yorkshire by building their confidence with unique learning experiences. The charity will see children from as young as 10 take part in ‘A Day in the Life of the NHS’, an event coordinated by local health and education organisations to showcase some of the jobs available in the NHS; usually attended by students from secondary schools across Hull and East Riding of Yorkshire.

The interactive learning event, which has been adapted for a younger audience, will open up with an address from Commonwealth boxing champion Tommy Coyle. Children will then enjoy a range of activities brought to them by real-life health staff, demonstrating a number of scenarios looking at just a sample of the many jobs available within the NHS.

One scenario will see children step inside a theatre situation, donning surgical gowns and learning about the role of a surgeon. Other scenarios include demonstrating the importance of communicating with those in hospital with a learning disability and how A&E staff deal with an emergency.

Sarah Smyth, Director of Quality & Clinical Governance / Executive Nurse at NHS Hull CCG, said:

“It’s a pleasure to work alongside the Children’s University to encourage and nurture the next generation of NHS staff. A Day in the Life gives local children a chance to peek behind the scenes and witness all of the rich, exciting and fulfilling roles available within the health service.”

Paula South, Director of Quality & Integrated Governance / Executive Nurse for NHS East Riding of Yorkshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) said:

“The Children’s University does a wonderful job helping children across our region to realise their potential; setting high aspirations and providing opportunities to help them towards achieving those aspirations. We are delighted they are taking part in A Day in the Life of the NHS, which has been set up with the aim of inspiring the next generation of the NHS workforce.”

A Day in the Life of the NHS will take place on Monday 21 January 2019 from 9.30am, at the Clinical Skills Building, Hull Royal Infirmary. 60 children are expected to attend from the Children’s University.

A number of organisations are involved in organising A Day in the Life of the NHS, these include: NHS East Riding of Yorkshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), NHS Hull CCG, Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust, City Health Care Partnership CIC, Yorkshire Ambulance Service and University of Hull.
